Default 1972 Tachometer

Hey,
Anyone ever swap in an aftermarket tach for their stock one. Mine has died and dont want to pay 300 for a stock replacement. I know its the tach, the cable is fine, the distributor gear is turning, etc. It is just not spinning the Tach. Am curious as to what will fit, I would like to go with a electric one to go with my MSD 6AL box.

The mechanical tachs don't fail very often. They only have a couple of moving parts. Basically they're just a spinning magnet inside a sprung needle carrier.
So;
Before you go to all that trouble...are you sure the cable is pushed all the way into the back of the tach?
AND
You can test your distributor gear theory (sometimes when they get worn they spin w/no cable in them but stop when the cable is inserted).
Pull the cable from the distributor and chuck the tach cable in a drill and spin it up then see if the tach moves.

... BUT ... set the drill in REVERSE ... spin the cable with the drill in reverse. Many shops can repair tach ... probably no more than what any good quality new aftermarket tach or repop tach costs.

*edit* an OE type electronic tach from 75 thru 77 C3 can be fitted into 68 thru 74 C3.

I believe I just saw one on ebay last night for about $30. Probabaly won't sell for that little, but certainly worth a look. Just do a search on corvette tachometer.

I just rechecked and it's out of a 74. Don't know if this helps but here's the link either way.

Good Luck!

This is where I am right now. How the heck does the dash come off. It seem to be held in place at the wind shield but I cant figure it out.

I believe I removed the 3 nuts that hold the assembly together and took it out in pieces (I did the speedo but think its the same setup)

It took me 10 hours to do the entire job so there has to be an easier way.

I removed the 2 bolts holding the steering column and removed the whole cluster in my 74 without even removing the top pad or center cluster. You have to drop the column down to get it all out though. I also had the tilt column all the way down too.
