shifting problems 79 l82
hello everyone, well I have recently been experiencing problems with my transmission shifting into gear...it does shift into gear but at high rpms. Well i read an earlier post in reference to the same problem. I checked the transmission fluid and its full....so the next thing to check is the transmission modulator....well can someone tell me where to locate it and what it looks like (seriously, not much of a mechanic here) and possibly some trouble shooting guides to determine if the modulator needs to be replaced. Oh yeah, I have 1 79 L82 with a th350 transmission with 4.10 gears (which really sucks)......Oh yes, this reminds me...Anyone have any suggestions on a different setup for my car..with the current transmission and gear ratio I have....I am afraid to run the car at 70 mph because the rpms are way too hard and i am afraid to damage the engine or tranny...any inputs would greatly be appreciated...marty

The first thing I would check is where the metal tube from the modulator fits in the vacuum port on top of the intake. The curved tubing should fit inside the port that is screwed in the intake. The rubber hose is not really to seal them but to keep them apart. The second thing would be to see if the metal tube has developed a crack, or the rubber hose that runs from the tube to the modulator has a hole or a crack in it. Hope this helps. Gary B.

spille85 the vacumn modularor will be located in the aft portion of the transmission. It is round shaped kond of looks like a frozen orange juice can and it will have a vacumn line going into it. But if your transmission is only going into gear a high rpm's I would first of all check to make sure your fluid level if full next make sure the transmission filter is not clogged. Traditionally vacumn modulator will cause shift points to be very high rpm. You either have a weak oil pump or possibly a torque convertor going out. Is it a turbo 350 or a 400?
