Personally, l'd say 500 miles. In reality, as long as the engine is broken in, which in most cases is about 50-100 miles.

You might want to run it for 500-1000 miles before putting expensive oil in it. When I build a new motor I fire it up, break in the cam, and when the temp. settles down take it around the block a few times, then dump the break-in oil with the motor still hot (of course). I would run it on the second batch for 500 miles, then put the good stuff in. However, there are a number of recent posts about Shell Rotella-T and other diesel oils that have become popular with older car owners with flat tappet cams. It would be a good idea to look at a couple of these as the additive package in newer oils is becoming less and less friendly to pushrod motors, and initial break-in is critical.
