I just replaced my 94 amp alternator with a warranty replacement alternator. Got 12 years out of it, so that's all good, not a lot of miles, but good on the years.
After replacing it; I was taking voltage readings to ensure it was all working well and it was readily apparent that it gets quite a bit of heat from the headers.
Anybody here ever made or fabricated a heat shield for protection?
One of the big causes for alternator failure is the air ways become clogged and overheat. The alt. has a fan that sends cooling air thru it. This area needs to be examined and cleaned periodically or it will cause the alt to fail. The newer alt. have a greater cooling capacity than the older ones.

I'm still looking for ideas on a head shield; similar I guess to the kind they make for starters. There's quite a bit of radiant heat from the exhaust where the alternator sits. I've got a later model 94 amp 12SI and it works fine. I'm planning on going to a CS-144(?) so I was looking for ideas to protect it.
Although I don't think you need one, instead of a shield that wraps the alt. I would make one from aluminum and place a reflective material between the aluminum shield and the alt. Make brackets to hold it in place; should look nice, shield the alt. from the exhaust and engine and allow air to circulate around the alt. for cooling purposes.
