Excellent post by LemansBlue68! One thing to add is that I believe when the octane of a fuel may not meet the specs when tested, so methyl alcohol is added to bring it up to specs or if it's just above spec then it can simply be shipped with the reting of next lower octane. I'm not sure if this is done in practice, but here in california there used to be stickers on the pumps which indicate that the gas contains methyl alcohol...I don't see them there now. Fuel is a different mix since our vettes were designed and I believe back then the lowest octane available was 89...I think the 87 octane showed up in the early 80's
