Default rearend question?

got a freind with a '78. took it to a tire shop to have it checked out because when driving and he came out of the gas the rear has a "sway" in it. feels like it is loose for a split second. the guys at the shop tried to tell him his wheel bearings were bad and wanted $1200 to replace. when he was checking it out himself, he noticed that what it really seemed to be was a bushin on what he thinks is a sway bar was worn out. could you guys help out and offer any ideas as to what this could be? is he on to something or does he really need wheel bearings? any help would be helpful.

the real end is really complicated....and i spent close to $3000 to fix everything that was wrong.....jack the rear end up and grab the tire at 3 and 9 oclock and try and wiggle it do the same at 6 and 12 oclock....also grab it and try and pull or push in onthe tire...let us know what it does......rear steer happens when the rear end alignment is out of wack and it gets really scary

he said he did that. 3-9 got verry little movement. 6-12, could get a little movement out of this. that is what made him think it was the bushings. when he just pushed in he no movement. what do you think?

Check the torque arms to see they are not rusted and flexing-look up from the bottom

The most common cause of "rear-steering" is worn trailing arm front bushings.

Gary do you think it has to do with your area being hot?I have never seen a wore out t arm bushing.I have cut hundreds out to replace the shims so they could be aligned but the bushings were always tight.I have replaced a ton of em because they were rusted or bent also. When you find that condition is the rubber missing or are the shims gone?--Roger

They are rubber, don't last forever. The shims don't usually fall out, in fact the older the Vette, the harder they are to remove. Many of the Vettes I see are from all parts of the country, so I don't think Texas heat figures in.

Just curious, you say it has a sway in it when you get out of the gas!
Do you mean it kinda jerks the rear of the car to one side?
Does it also do the same thing under initial acceleration only to the other side?
If that's the case the diff yoke side play is excessive!
Just another idea to throw in the fray
