Default Best Carb

Hi everybody

I have just finish my 79 resto and my carb is actually a Rochester M4MC. It is out of order and i would like to change it to a best performance carb. I have an Edelbrock intake manifold EDL3701.
What type of carb do you know it is good for street/strip . This manifold have a spreadbore pattern.

Thank's for your help.

Thats a personal choice
Your going to hear Holley,Quadrajet, Demon
What ever you go with make sure you have the hood clearance for it.

I Like the Quadrajet but the Holley Street Avenger is a great carb, easy to tune... only thing I diddnt like about it is the fact that its a square bore.
I prefer to keep things stock ..hence the QJ

Also, I couldnt use my stock cold air induction air cleaner with a Holley

I think the biggest mistake people make is putting on a new carb & thinking it is ready to go. Holley installs the same power valve in all its carbs a 65 but your application may need a higher or lower PV or different jetting so don't expect to mount the carb & go racing and then call the carb junk when its not working right. I'm just saying be prepared to dial it in.

So I guess what I'm saying is everyone has a favorite. Mine is Holley
very easy to work on.

You probably won't get any better performance with a different carburetor. Rebuild or have yours rebuilt and it'll perform better than anything you could put on it.

Being that you live in France, I would guess that it would be very expensive to have a new carburetor shipped to you. Perhaps you should try to make your existing carburetor function properly.
The Quadra-Jet is a really nice carburetor. It performs well with stock or high performance engines.

With the help of Corvette Forum members, a myrid of tuning procedures available on the internet, and in books, you will be able to dial it in.
Consider purchasing a wide band O2 meter so you can tell when you have the carburetor functioning perfectly.

Woah I wouldn't touch those remanufactured q-jets if I were you. I've heard some bad things about those. I suggest having yours rebuilt because yours is already jetted for your engine.

PLEASE take my advise..if only this 1 time..
DO NOT buy a remanufactured QJ on line or from any place more than a half hour from home

Find a local rebuilder that you can limp your Corvette down to his shop to have him tune it

I tried ordering the reman "one size fits all" $hit
And thats exactly what you get.

Ok I 'll think it over. I would buy a Carb online in states because in France, carbs are more expensive.

Thank's again.

Im sorry, I ddint realize you were overseas
To be completely honest I would recommend a Holley Street Avenger.
I prefer the Quadrajet but if you buy the Holley you can be 90% sure it will bolt on and run, and they are very east to tune.
I bought a Holley Street Avenger 670 that I bolted on my stock L48 and it ran great right out of the box.
You should make sure it will fit under your hood if you decided to buy one.
I wish you the best on whatever you choose

You say that you have a holley carb. Did you change your manifold ?
Or have you mount an adapter gasket ?

I have an Edelbrock Performer 2101
Good for both the Holley and QJ

If you look at my pictures you will see the Holley on the Edelbrodk intake
The pic is called Under Hood

I have to agree with the idea of rebuilding your QJet - the QJet is an excellent carb when it's rebuilt and set up correctly and will give you at least as much if not more performance and reliabilty as a Holley, Demon, or Edelbrock carb.

I have both a Holley and a QJet on my two Vettes and I'm very satisfied with the QJet on my '78 L82 car.

I live overseas, and did not know any Q-Jet - expert here.
I can tune a guitar, but a carburator is a bit different.
So, I bought me a Demon-carb.
Lars, was kind enough to offer his help, and he checked it out, before he sent it to me.
Long story short: My car car is like a totally new car. It runs and idle so smooth, and accellerate powerfull all the way. (As far as I dare.)

I'm with Bob. The Holley SA has been an excellent carb for me and haven't had any issues for 3 years. However, the QJ is also an excellent one, relatively easy to rebuild yourself if you take your time and pay attention, but just not understood very well by several people.

I agree that you should get the q-jet rebuilt. The beautiy of the q-jet is that it meters fuel based on manifold vacuum. I get over 20 MPG on the highway on Pontiac 400. I don't know much about Holleys...as I've never had one. Do stay away from "rebuilt q-jet for all applications" as mentioned above. Rebuilding a q-jet is very easy, but If you need modifications done to your q-jet, they are easy to do for your application as well.
