Default Lincoln Mark VIII Fan

I bought a Mark 8 fan today for $50.00. I want to do some testing with it and plant to install it this winter along with several other projects. I don't have an overheating problem now but thought that long term this could be a better way to cool the C3. PhotoVette1 will be doing this shortly and will post the install.

reports are its a power pig, 40 odd amps, so you need to bump the alternator capacity to cover it. Pics when your done

$50??? where? thats a good price, they're gong for $120 on ebay this week. I'm going to go try to pull one from a local junk yard. They say if you pull one from a 98 car, they flow 5k cfm. That'll suck the car in front of me into the radiator.
Pics please, I'll be doing this in the winter too!
You keeping or junking your theromostat?? I want to junk it and put the fan on a switch with a temp sensor either right near the upper rad hose on the intake or on the block.

Default just finished mine

tested the car for the first time yesteday with my mark VIII. im sot sure but yes i think i may have to spring for a bigger alt. as far as if it works or not i really dont know yet. it was overcast and ONLY 85 degrees outand a bit drizzly. i left it in 3rd at 4000 rpm on the highway for 5 minutes and it was fine. when i got into stop and go the guage went up a bit more than highway. ac was on the entire time. the bottom line will be when i test it in more normal condx 95 degrees in the sun. the installation was easy . i did cut off the ears and mounted in upside down so i could easily get to the plug, ehich i bought from the ford dealership for 16.00 check out the pics and if anyone can id the alternator pse let me know

I picked up one of the Mark VIII fans and plan on doing the same thing when my car gets back from the paint shop. The fan is nice, seems that its going to work and im going to go ahead and get a biggert alt to cover the extra amps.

Thanks for the pics rastadr, love the installation!

Kragen/Schucks/Checkers sells those alternators.

I bought the fan from a local junk yard. I saw the e-bay prices and thought if I had to pay that much for them a new one was a better value. I am looking to go with a D C Controller which is set up to use a 180 t-stat but am still debating this issue. If the controller will maintain 180 no matter what the circumstance I will use it. Definately need to get a bigger alt. if I don't use the controller. With the controller a 100 amp alt will work.

I hooked some power to the Mark VIII fan and it really moves some air. Three large guage wires operate it I don't know what speed I had it on but will experiment more with it later.

radstar...time for a spreadbar now!!!
Very nice install, looks good.
You hook that up to the termostate or a temp sensor somewhere else in the intake or block?
I don't know much about electrical so I might summon you guru's down the road for some setup advice.

I will be checking out the local junk yards this weekend.

Hope you get to enjoy the fruit of your labor this weekend.

I used a mid 80's 350 camarro fan.

I'd post the pic, but it is huge.

Rastadr,
If you get another alternator, which one are you going to use. It calls for a 130amp alt. unless you go with a d.c. controller; then you can get by with a 100amp alt.

Bernie, have you figured out which wire is which? I'm getting ready to test my $11 Mark VIII miracle fan...

Batman,
You really did good to get one for $11.00! I am taking it to our shop tomorrow and will check each wire, label them so I know which is common and which is low and hi speed. I'm going to measure the amps needed for start up and continous operation and hope to post my results tomorrow evening. I plan to learn a lot about electrical circuits that I don't know now. Especially since I want to update the entire electrical system myself. I hope others post their designs and results so we can all learn from this modification!

Bernie the plug at the fan is labled with a + which this is the black wire with a red stripe, the black wire is negative and the blue wire I assume is low. I am using the black with red stripe and the black wire to run mine. I just cut and taped the blue wire (its the smaller of the three wires).

Mine has two black wires. One of them is the ground, one of them is low or high speed. I couldn't tell much difference between the black + wire and the blue + wire - but my test leads were also way too small. Next test I'll use jumper cables.

The good news is the $11 miracle works fine (as does the 16" Caddy fan for my GMC).

I just checked my fan on the Snap-on electrical machine. It spiked 30 amps to start and pulled 9 amps on continous running. The outside black wire is positive, the outside blue wire is negative and I don't know what the center wire is yet. When I tried it with the blue neg. wire it sparked. Will call the Lincoln dealer to find out.

Are all three wires the same gauge? Let us know what you find out from the dealer.

Chevyman,
All three wires are the same guage on my fan. The two outside wires are positieve and negative and the plug shows which is which. The center wire is not used according to the service mgr at our local lincoln dealer. He said the fan is not a two speed fan but is a variable speed fan. I will receive a schematic of it tomorrow. It seems that the delta controller that PhotoVette is getting is the answer to operating this fan properly. I plan on contacting them tomorrow too. I will post this info as I get it.

Bernie, like I said in the other thread there appears to be an early/late switch on the Mark VIII fans. Somewhere around 97 they went from two-speed to variable speed. The older fans used two 40-amp relays to provide power - start in low, then bump to high to avoid that insane 100-amp spike.
