After a frame-off project, how do you know how many body mount shims to use at any given mounting point (assuming you were too dumb to keep track when you took the body off)?
I assume this has something to do with leveling the body (as opposed to insuring a certain clearance, for example) - but how do you know if it is level? Level to what? What guides or standards are there besides eyeballing it?
I used poly body mounts and added two shims per body mount (per instructions), one under and one on top. I did not torque the bolts, then checked which mounts were 'loaded' and carried the body's weight. several were turnable by hand so I added shims until all eight body mounts were not turnable. The difference between the one with the most shims and the one with no additional shims was about .100" (not much). I bought shims in different thickness at HomeDepot, their fender washers fit perfectly.
I did this without removing the body. The old mounts were rubber and so worn that counting shims was a waste of time...

That's good to know, about rotating the bushings. I'm doing the #3 and #4 mounts now. The #4 brackets were completely rotted inside the rubber mounts and new brackets were welded on.
