I'm preparing the 73 for full paint job. I've purchased a new GM front urethane bumper cover. Should I have it painted off the car since 'flex additive' is required or install it first then have the car painted. If painted off the car, there could be some color-matching issues.
I'm guessing the factory painted the car with the bumper cover installed.
I installed the mounting hardware in the bumper and took about 2'X4' sheet of 1/2" plywood and made mounts to support the bumper for painting. I then carefully bolted the bumper on the painted car.
Make sure you tape the threads or the paint will make the job harder.
When they were new the factory used the same paint...in fact the same batch of paint, so everything matched perfectly. If you don't have any paint left over which was used for the rest of the car, then you should have a professional complete the painting for you. The professionals will blend the new paint in with the old paint so that there is no clean seam...works like a charm.
When I checked on getting that done for my car they were asking about $700. I spent almost that much doing the job myself. But, in my case I actually had almost a quart of left over paint from when the car was painted.
If you do it yourself and try to do a color match it might look good in the dark, but out in the sun there will be a clear difference.
