Our forum-friend 454Big plans to trade his wonderfull and unique tuxedo black/medium blue '68 L89 for a crude ZR-1!
Because I know, that he will regret for this soon, I try to bring him away from this plan. What can I do to convince him, that selling this black beauty would be a sin and that no ZR-1 can ever replace the feeling and the spirit of driving an original chrome-bumpered muscel-car of the late sixties????
I need your help to prevent him from the mistake of his life!
You could show him a schematic of the wiring diagrams for the ZR1 along with all associated relays/switches/magic boxes/etc & ask if he feels confidant enough to tackle any unforeseen electrical problem that occurs (unless he's an auto electrician!)
Paul
Yeah, and have him send an email to geoff jeal in england for what it'd cost to fix a ZR engine! Friend of mine smoked his and it's now being converted to a souped up jeal something something (can't remember, think it was a 359 w/ 540HP or so) and it costs him a huge amount of $$$$$
Also tell him that for decent braking w/ the Z he needs either Brembo or Bear brakes (I assume he lives in Germany, those speeds over there really call for good brakes), setting him back another 16k DM!!
Add some coil overs for handling.... and then some and then some.....
I´m still confused!
On the one hand the beautiful L-89 Convertible with the tremendous power and on the other hand the AUTOBAHN STORMER ZR-1....... :boxing
It helps to live in Germany, so you can nail the pedal...... :D
Nothing has happened yet, but I´m pretty unsure what to do.
The ZR-1 I have in mind is claimed to be one of the best running ZR-1´s in Germany, hitting the 300 Km/H barrier easily (190 mph).
The Tripower I know what I have.......
I can´t afford both the ZR-1 and the Tripower, but I have the other Big Block in spare of course........ (besides the Cadillac and the Firebird)
I guess time will tell........
I will keep you posted on my decision - I guess it will be made on this sunday (hopefully! :jester )
The only thing I´m afraid of is that I really regret having sold the black beauty :mad
What a fooish move! I have a feeling that this is one of those mistakes he will regret the rest of his life. 30 years from now he'll say,"If only I had kept the BB-68." Except he'll probably say it in German. :D
I honestly don't think that there is a wrong decision. The zr1 will outhandle and out perform the ol BB. But the BB is just way cooler than any C-4 (my opinion) I really don't think there is a bad choice there. I would almost say "flip a coin" but its a pretty big decision.
Maybe you could keep the '68 and buy a non-ZR-1 C4. As far as I know, the LT-5 engine is basically the only thing special about a ZR-1 other than the wider wheels & tires / minor body flare. The same amount of power or more can be made with a modified LT1 or LT4.
If the LT-5 engine breaks, it will cost you a LOT of money to repair and I'm guessing that replacement parts for an LT-5 engine would not be easily obtainable.
Don't misunderstand me. I really like the ZR-1s but I have always felt like they were overated in regards to the horse power / $dollar$. The BEST thing about the LT-5 is the WOW  factor!
Base model C4s are getting really inexpensive and they great platforms for "tuner" cars.
Take a couple of asprin and hopefully the fever will pass :yesnod:
I´m proud to announce that the tuxedo black L-89 Convertible still belongs to me!
I had a so wonderful ride in the car on saturday at a vintage car ralley in the Rhein - area in Germany that I wasn´t able to sell it! :blueangel:
Sir Tripower, who also participated in the ralley, did definitely a lot for making up this decision! Many thanks for doing this!!!
He is a real good friend of mine!!!
I guess I really would have regret the sale of the car very soon.....
For all folks that are interested how this beauty looks like, click on :
Glad to see that you have put that difficult decision behind you. I'm sure that you and your '68 will enjoy many years together.:yesnod:
After discussing this with you via e-mail, I did some more ZR-1 research last night. The more that I read the less appealing the ZR-1 seemed to be. I don't mean to belittle the ZR-1 it is still a really cool car but it seems like the ZR-1 performance level can be met and or even exceeded using less money and less complexity than required by the ZR-1.
Due to their resale value dropping so rapidly, I still believe that the regular C4's make an excellent starting platform to build a "super-car" from. I wouldn't mind having a "hot-rodded" C4 parked next to my C3.
