I am installing an AC compressor in my '72. A previous owner clipped the wires going to it rather than just disconnecting them so I am trying to figure out which wires go where. I have located the green one for the clutch and there is a black one coming from the same place in the wiring harness that I think must be for the superheat switch on the back of the compressor. Before connecting it I threw a volt meter on it and was a bit surprised to see 12v on it all the time regardless of ignition swith or AC control position. Does this sound like the correct wire? I don't see any other black clipped wires in the vacinity of the AC but that might not mean too much -- when I bought the car there was nothing electrical except the starter and ignition system that worked....
I dont have a 72 wiring diagram handy, but I do have a 67 and the black wire is a ground. Now if that ground goes to the same place as the heater fan ground and the wiper ground, and that ground is not hooked up at the starter, it will show 12V.

My wiring diagram shows the black wire going to a thermal limiter. I have not been able to locate that yet. The thermal limiter also has 2 green wires connected to it, the one that goes to the clutch and one that goes to the thermal switch (I have found that).
Actually, if I understand my wiring diagram, the black wire should have the same voltage on it as the green one if disconnected. I think I have the wrong wire. I guess I need to find the thermal limiter.
A while back, when trying to get my wiper motor to work, I connected a black wire near the wiper motor to the wiper motor ground and smoked that wire. I turned out to be hot. To get the wiper motor and blower motor to work, I made my own ground wires for those. I wonder if the black wire is connected to power on the starter instead of ground.
