I have a '77 I purchased just 6 weeks ago - in great condition with only 54,000 documented miles. It was driven very infrequently for the last 2 years.
Under full throttle, the transmission makes a loud squeal when shifting from 1st to 2nd. I have noticed no problems with shifting when driving less aggressively. Could this be due to old trans. fluid, or is this an indication of a problem?
Thanks for the expertise, and for the great forum! I've learned a ton!
Are you absolutely certain it's the transmission making the noise?????? Sounds like it could be an alternator or fan belt slipping, they frequently do this under full acceleration if not properly tightened. If you do have the noise isolated to transmission, suggest you perform fluid and filter change and see if that improves your situation.
I would agree that you may want to check belts, motor mounts etc. before determining it is the tranny. This type of noise can travel and be a real fooler. One thing you might try is a manual run up to the same rpm in 1st and check for the noise.
