Brake warning light came on tonight. Hand brake off but light remains on. I disconnected lead on proportioningg valve and light goes out so I know it must be a problem in brakes. My question is what could have caused this issue? I do not see any leaks in system. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you do a search in old post it is mentioned that an old valve can stick. It can be taken apart and cleaned up, but the general feeling for the cost,, you should just replace it. If you are certain there are no leaks and you have not serviced the brakes in the last couple of days as in pumping hard bleeding, then I would be looking at the valve. Don't forget the master cylinder can be gone without leaking on the ground,, this can be verified easyly by pressing hard on the brakes and feeling for loss of pressure. Good luck
The valve shifts and turns on the light for 1 reason: A pressure imballance between the front and rear brakes, i.e: a leak or bubble in 1 leg of the brakes. You will need to bleed all 4 wheels to clear the air. You can reset the brake light by cracking the good side of the brakes and pressing on the brake pedal.

had this happen to me, first didn't listen to the Forum guru's who had "been there, done that" and ultimately resolved the problem by wiseing up and replacing all four calipers to find the one(s) that were letting air into the system.
