Ok... I've finally made my decision. I'm going with an Edelbrock carb. I wanted a Demon :reddevil , but it wouldn't fit under my stock air cleaner. It's a 600 cfm model with an electric choke. Is anyone else using this carb? If so, how did it perform out of the box? Did it require much, if any, tuning? (See my sig for engine specs.) Also, what's the best way to hook up the electric choke? What circuit should I use for my power?
I have one on my 74 and I like it ........It gets great gas mileage and great performance....I am planning on having Lars rebuild the original quadrajet but until then I am quite pleased with the carb......Hard to beat the price as well and the performer intake is a good base for it to sit :yesnod: Plus since I assume you are under 400 horsepower it should provide plenty of CFM's
I've used the manual choke 600 cfm version off & on. Seems the throttle response is a little bit better than my Q-jet. I performance tested the 2 carbs & came out with virtually identical ETs/mph. I still think highly of that carb considering it's simplicity and the performance it delivers.
you state that you want to use the stock air cleaner, are you sure the carb you're looking at will fit? don't have a catalog right now in front of me,but seems there was something on top of these carbs that sat higher up than a regular quadrajet. i'm running an edelbrock 795cfm quadrajet(see sig)#1903,with the stock air cleaner, snorkel set up,with K&N filter.it uses the same hot air choke as the original, but this will need adjustment as well as the mixture screws. i set the mixture on mine myself, but when it got chilly last fall,i had starting problems,so i set the choke to 79 specs, but ultimately took it to a shop to fine tune the choke. the price on these is steep,$410,but i wanted something to fit right in to the original hook-ups,etc. my old quad was rebuilt twice by a local guy,and twice by myself. it always ran a little rich and i just got tired of fooling with it. when i got the edelbrock quad i disassembled it enough to seal the well plugs with JB Weld epoxy.all in all i'm satisfied with the carb.
Hi,
I have a 600 CFM Edelbrock Carb sitting on a performer manifold in my '74 right now, it comes off next week when the motor comes out. Swapping in a 468.
There is a wire run off the alt to the elec choke, but I haven't looked at it in a while.
Runs plenty strong. I have to say it works fine. I can't find any faults with it.
It does a great job.
I also have a extremely new 600 cfm Holley that came off my 305 race car when I swapped in the 350.
That carb has less then 200 miles on it, Ran great but couldn't get enough performance out of that motor to keep it so I upgraded to a 425 hp 350. that motor came with a 650 cfm holley in decent shape from what I can tell, but I'm replacing it with a new 750 cfm holley. I bought two 750s, one for the big block, and one for the race car.
So I'll probably put all 3 carbs and 2 performer manifolds up on the for sale board pretty soon.
From what I can tell the edelbrock works fine, but the Holley's appear to be better made, higher quality units.
good luck
