Default Mech fuel pump check procedures ?

Hi everyone I need some advice on running a test on my mech fuel pump. I have drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter and rebuilt the carb. I have a suspicion with regards to the fuel pump. I would like to test the pump with my vacuum gauge, but I don’t want to put any gas in the tank in case I have to drop it. Since there is no gas in the system since I rebuilt the carb I was thinking of disconnecting the fuel line from the carb and then disconnect the fuel inlet line to the fuel pump, then place my vacuum gauge where the fuel inlet line goes into the fuel pump and then crank the car over a few times. Does anyone know what type of reading I should get on the vacuum gauge when cranking over the car only?
Any ideas would help.

With the engine not running, I am not sure what the pump should be pulling, but with just cranking the engine there has to be something anyways. I am going to put the vacuum gauge on it anyways, if it does not pull even 1 in/hg I know that the pump is dead. But if I do get a small reading I am going to hook up a small bottle of gas to the fuel pump inlet hose and see if the car will then run. I wanted to check this first befor putting gas in the tank and then finding out that the problem is at the tank.

Easiest test is to run both the inlet and Return lines to a gas can. Crank the engine over, and it should run. Of course, as you've done everything else, why not just replace the pump? Most fail due to a diaphram failure.
