Default LT5 in a C3?

Has anyone ever done this. Seems like the LT5s are comming down in price and I have read some threads about LSx swaps. I am looking to do something different. Has anyone done this? If so, how does it fit and ride?

The biggest disadvantages I see are there are fewer and fewer replacement parts available and the aftermarket is small for them.

Other than that, it would be high on the cool factor, but for the same price you could have an LS2 with more power, easier upgradability/ tunability and a 6-speed or overdrive auto.

As far as difficulty, it would be more difficult than and LSx swap. It is about the same weight as a small block so the ride would be comparable to a stock car.

Aren't they designed around the dimensions of the 2nd gen bottom end? I think they would bolt right up... although I'm not sure how well the DOHC heads would fit.

I actually picture this being marginally more difficult than an LT1 swap, and less difficult than an 3rd-gen swap.

The LT5 ZF6 speed has a longer input shaft than the LT1/L98 model. So your average transmission will not bolt up. The mounting pattern is also not the same with the starter on top of the block.

Yes the block has the engine mount bolt pattern as the typical small block. The difficulty I foresee comes from the electronics used to control them. There just isn't the tuning support that is available for the LT1's and LSx's.

No, on the ZR-1 forum they were talking about how the prices were comming down. LT5s are not hard to find. Neither are the parts. You just have to know where to get them. The ZR-1 registry has a classified section. They have a couple of engines for sale there. Also there are some LT5 tuners that have old parts for sale along with NOS Parts. Exotic Muscle sell CNC Heads and Ported intakes. You still have White Racing, Doug Rippie, EES, SGC, and Lingenfelter, to name a few, that would probably have spare parts or Engines for sale. I'm not too worried abought finding the engine. Just needed info on the swap. Like I said I have a year to think about it. I am going to Korea in Dec. and won't be back til Jan of 08.

One thing I would think about is how hard will it be to find parts in 5 years? 10 years?

Not worth the cash for the swap. It's a cool motor, but the LS's are better bang for the buck when compared.

I've seen them installed in earlier C-1 and 2's, but never a 3. It's just a dated swap, pcm is a pain to program, not many go fast goodies, and parts will dry up.

thanks everyone for the support. I am wanting to do something different for my next Vette but, I just don't know what. I want to take my time on this one and have it forever. Maybe pass it down to my son who is 19 months old. Give it to him as a college graduation gift.
