I picked up a Champion rebuilt carb from ebay this afternoon (yeah, yeah, I know but it was cheap).
Price was cheap and want to use it on my wife's recently acquired stock L81.
(I am going to send the stocker to National Carb for a professional rebuild...)
This carb has the following #:
17086004
2815 JMY
Other than it being a 1986 carb for chevy and auto trans, what else do these numbers indicate? What rods #'s are for stock 81? Anything else I should check before putting the rebuilt carb on?
Before I go further, is there a blue solenoid on it? If there is, you don't have to do jack with that carburetor. Bolt it on, plug it in, and have fun. The E4ME is tuned by the computer.
I'll take it to the next step, If there is NO blue connector you have the wrong carb. The 81 is set up for the E4me, E carb, it should have a throttle position sensor and a fuel mix solenoid that work with the ECM.
It has the blue connector. The 1986 date doesnt make me feel good, but the paperwork and instructions with it indicate that it's OEM for a slew of 81-85 gm vehicles...
It adjusts the air/fuel mixture based on the readings from a few sensors. You don't have to do anything but plug it in, basically. That's the good thing and bad thing about the '81 system, if it's in good condition you don't have to tinker with it, which is good. The bad thing about it is the same thing, you CAN'T tinker with it because it's controlled by a primitive computer that hasn't been decyphered. One thing that CAN be done to make it more programmable is to take a computer from a car that also used the E4ME and adjust the pin outs to plug in to that. Generally computers from trucks and Camaros can be used for that.
