Default stud question

my rear wheel on my 68 has a broken wheel stud and the remaining four are all different lengths.....are these things welded to the back of the spindle....how easy/hard is it to replace a stud and/or remove the spindle?

Hi Tam

Good news, bad news:

Good news is the studs can be knocked out of the spindle - Bad news is if you have a parking brake the backplate and hardware will block the removal.

The non-bubba solution is to remove the spindles (and replace the bearings while you're at it) with the difficulity dependent on your mechanical skills and available tools. I do not think there is any good way to do this without taking the trailing arms off the car.

The somewhat more bubba solution is to make a hole in the backplate after removing the park brake hardware, align the stud(s) to the hole, remove/replace stud(s), and reinstall the park brake hardware. This can be done leaving the trailing arms in place. It also has the advantage of reuse if another stud breaks or strips.

thanks for the info.....might try the bubba method, didn't think it would be easy from the looks of the trailing arm assembly....thinking about replacing the whole trailing arm unit with a new one....

It wasn't that bad - my t-arms and bearings were in good shape so removing them was way low on my list.

I just extended one of the vent slots in the backplate (5 o'clock facing passenger, 7 o'clock facing driver side) with a dremmel tool. Only took a saturday afternoon and part of a six pack.

Well, maybe the whole six pack but i don't know if the ones you drink while cleaning up and putting the tools away count against the job or as free time...
