What's the line production number for your car? I'm around 2500, and I'm pretty sure it has the later support.
If I do decide to fab one myself, you can bet it will be quite a bit sturdier than the GM design.
Mine: 16729. I also have a '76 hood that is orginal and the switches and wiring for the 'headlights uP!' warning--it was a low mileage, 1-owner, no hit car. They (GM) must have been cleaning the shop up the day they made my Vette.
I would kill for a well designed aluminum radiator support:
It should have integral support lugs (bolt/bushing mount) for a special edition DeWitts radiator and the same type of mounts for either dual Spals or Mark VIII fans. It also should have integral poly radiator seals pre-installed.
It should also come polished or natural.
Let's design and build'em and make some money.

I recently pulled my radiator support. I have come to the conclusion that the design of it is also intended to add alot of rigidity and structural support to the front end of the car. The 2 lower bolts should be considered body mounts #9-10, yes? Then there's the 6 bolts that attach the core support to the body.
This is true. My home made support attaches to all the stock locations and is much stronger than stock. We'll see how good she cools once I get this SOB on the road.
Ill post some pics if its worth a $#!+ at cooling...

Sounds expensive...
Weird car you have there. Mine was built much earlier and has the standard early 77 mish-mash of 76 and 78 parts, but the wiring (what hasn't been Bubba-ized) is all 77.
For what its worth, I have a 71 small block convertible, and I stole the support out of a 78 car, it fit, of course it looks different. No problem getting it in there though.
I have a '75 and a '78. the core supports are interchangeable, but, the later model mounts a narrower radiator (narrower between the fenderwellls. The later model radiator (and shroud) is therefore easier to wrestle into and out of the car. The radiator and shroud for my 75 is a real nightmare to get in and out. I think the radiator is about 3-4 inches less wide on the 78. clearance to the front bushing of the upper suspension a-arms.
so if you're really looking to max out the radiator core width, the earlier version.
tape a large piece of cardboard to the front and back of the radiator before you put it in, to protect the core from damage during the wrestling exercise.
if you go with electric fans, then to-heck with the shroud hassle.

Sounds like someone installed a narrower radiator in your car. Every one I've ever seen goes all the way across. My 77's stock radiator covered pretty much everything from fender to fender.

I thought 76 early had the long a/c compressor and earlier support while 76 late had the short a/c compressor and same core support that was used through 81?
