LS-5 BB, 4-spd, 3.55 gear, I get 12 mpg on a good day, less if I can't keep my foot out of it.
LS5 454/390 308 rear (heavy posi)...guess I'm getting between 10 and 15....never was able to lay off of it for a full tank...just too much fun! Oh well...
I agree, why would you expect to get good gas mileage from an old car anyway. I've got a Toyota.
There's a difference between good mileage and just wasting gas unnecessarily. If this guy is getting 10-12 mpg out of a carbed but otherwise stock 82 he's dumping TONS of gas out of the tailpipe. Utterly pointless. Of course, the switch from FI to carb was utterly pointless, but that's an entirely different argument.
i did not make the switch, it was like that when i got it. i dont really care how bad the gas mileage, is but like "im batman" said, if i am dumping gas, then that is a reason to wonder. my last car was a camry and i can not stand driving that kind of car anymore. i just want to be economical while driving this car, if that makes sense.
10 to 12 with new q-jet no leaks i know it sucks...i had a 77 back when i graduated in 76.....now i know why my parents were always bitching about my gas bill lol

Like I said, If it's running good and strong and not running rich. If you want better mileage go back to fuel injection. I got an excellent TPI setup off a 91 vette I will let go for $500.
For power and economy, it's hard to beat FI. Even the junkyard TBI swap outlined in a recent issue of Corvette Fever would be a big improvement. Most of the FI equipment is likely still in place, making the conversion easier than on earlier cars.
Bass, I know you said that the car was like that when you bought it...and it's somewhat understandable due to the rather fickle nature of the '82 Cease-Fire injection system. 10-12 MPG sounds VERY low to me - my 77 L48 gets around 17-19, maybe a hair more if I'm on the highway and keep my foot out of it. For the cost of a new carb, you could probably do the TBI swap. TPI is great, but it will be a bit more expensive and involved. The original '82 system was a version of TBI, so your fuel lines and such should be set up to handle it.
to do this tbi swap, what all equipment would i probably need? i mean, the major pieces. this carb is brand new, so maybe i could sell it and help offset some of the cost.
Bass,
The car was originally fitted with an in-tank electric fuel pump that puts out about 12 p.s.i. which is all that TBI needs. Port FI needs about 50 p.s.i. but a carburettor (that's how WE spell it in Australia!) only needs about 4-7 p.s.i.
So, it is possible that the standard (electric) fuel pump is putting out more pressure than the Carb's needle and seat can handle and therefore, more petrol than necessary is being forced into the carb and out the exhaust pipe unburned.
If so, that would explain the smell of petrol so I'd check that first. However, I agree with all the others who tell you to re-fit the twin TBI unit if your dad still has it, otherwise buy one, preferably reconditioned, or fit a later TPI system, but that will require a higher pressure fuel pump.
Above all, ask for several different opinions and choose wisely.
hmmm....The last time I checked I was getting around 14.7@65mph.....any work with the fun peddle and it's grins/mile. If you decide to keep the in tank pump try a inline pressure regulator to tame it down.....set it at 6psi that should help for a start.....then get the carb jetted.
