I have a 383 in my 82 with 3:55 gears. On the way to Vetts on the Rookies, I got 17 on the interstate. I'm sure not going to complain. Larry

Gas mileage is one thing that I pay quite a bit of attention to with my cars. My vette on a road trip got around 21MPG in 5th gear. My DD got around 31MPG today when I filled it up with gas. My truck will only get around 17.5MPG on its best tank. Around town driving in the vette, I get much less MPG. There are quite a few times the secondaries get opened up when I am driving it.

I watch mpg closely--the mpg starts dropping (and it does so fairly suddenly) then I know it's time for a tune up. When spark plugs start to wear, it easily cuts mileage 4-5 mpg.

Do you think the EFI or the 5-speed made the bigger difference?

With that kinda mileage from a 454, I may have to re-think my next engine purchase...

Getting less then 10 in town with new ZZ4 with rollers, hot cam. 750 holly 4speed with factory a/c. That sound too low? Haven't made any adjustments since it's hit the road.

I care about gas mileage because if it's getting good economy then the engine is running efficiently & an efficient engine is bunging out more power. If you're getting poor mileage because it's running rich then power will suffer, if you're getting poor mileage because of the cam/gear/whatever then enjoy it
'81 running stock computer controlled carb, a rew tweaks, 2.87 rear & an OD trans gives me around 25mpg when taking it easy on the highway (constant 75ish mph - 2000rpm). Our gallons are a bit bigger than US gallons (& a heck of a lot more expensive ).

so would an option be to get the carb switched back to 650? or should i just try smaller jets first? i feel like the car is bogging down when i punch it. i dont know if that would have anything to do with this or not...

I get 11-12 mpg with my 1978 L82 4spd if I keep my foot out of it.
I would agree that your carb is too big, About 600cfm would be better
for a s/b.
