Default Brake switch problem

What is going on if I'm only reading 6.8V on the hot side of my brake switch, with the ignition on( i register no voltage with the ignition off), and the brake light doesn't even come on until I turn on the headlights?

Thanks for helping me sort thru each of these wiring issues.

You should have 12V at the brake switch all of the time. So, first you are not getting power to that circuit. You should follow the wiring back to the source to find where the power should be picked up and check all along that line. ( dont forget the fuse) What is probably happening when you turn on the key, is that some power is being supplied through some other circuit and is backing up in there to the switch. It also could be that a ground is not good somewhere and backing power up to the switch. If you fix the supply voltage problem you probably would not see any problem, but their might be a problem somewhere else that will be ground ralated.
