Thanks for all your help guys, swapped the plug leads out this weekend and also fitted some non-stock lead routing hardware that takes the leads along the rocker covers instead of down behind the manifolds (partly because having done the job of fitting them behind there once before I swore I'd never do it again!) It seems to have sorted my problems out (for now at least) some parts of the leads for the front 4 cylinders were in a pretty bad state when I got them out with some damage to insulation and were fairly filthy too.
This means I've said goodbye to the stock ignition shielding, but I decided I could live with that if the car runs properly.
