Hey guys im new to the forum and Ive been trying to sell my '78 Firebird Formula so I can buy a C3...So I was talking to my uncle yesterday and he said he knows where one was for sale, so we went out to look at it and it was a stock 77 L92 and it wasnt all that nice and I really wanted a 4speed this one was an auto. So the owner says he has another one in his garage thats a 4speed, So we go in to look at it and its a '76 350 4speed, I dont know what all was done to the engine but it had headers, edelbrock intake and carb and it had some kind of mild cam that I could hear when he cranked it up...the body was actually pretty good looking except it had a 1 piece front end with the exposed headlights(which im not too crazy about), and the interior of the car is near perfect, So the car need news tires, a new waterpump, and an alignment and its good to go, and hes asking $4500
BTW, Im sorry about the lack of pictures, didnt have a camera on me at the time
Just given what you are telling us, I say its not a bad deal. But always negotiate, cause there is always an "oh sheet, why didn't I see that" waiting to bite you on old cars. Good luck.
That isn't a terrible price if the body and frame are in good shape. Check for rust, or you will end up seriously dissapointed. If you are not too mechanically inclined, I would bring someone who is to make sure the motor isn't missing to bad. Don't just settle for a car, because it's there. I almost did this when i was vette shopping. I found a 69 near by, that was described as runs and drives but needs TLC. When i got there, the car was in primer, wouldn't start, was stuck in first, and when i checked the frame for rust, i stuck my hand through it . Of course i wanted the car to be fixable, b/c it was a 69 4-speed for 7k. I kept looking and found a 75, with an exellent body and frame but with bad paint and motor, and I feel it is the perfect car for me. My avatar is what i started with, my sig is what i have now (except just added l88 hood).
See how it starts when the engine is cold - often times if cars are hard to cold start a seller will warm it up first then when you show up it starts like a dream.
Take it for a test drive.
Like 75blackray says, get something with a decent frame. Some common areas where our cars rust are the radiator support, the windshield frame and where the rear trailing arms connect to the frame.
