Default engine woes

ok im going crazy depending on what path i should take. As we all know i got the bad end of the deal on my motor build using crap somg heads and rpm cam . Well I was planning on using some vortec heads upgraded for more lift with a comp xe262 cam and an air gap intake. Well I have been pondering the idea of a crate motor. To do the top end pakage im right at about 2500 bucks give or take a few this is using the stock bottom end with 4 valve reilfe pistons that have a lot of carbon build up for a rebuilt motor with less than 1000 miles on it. I fiqure for a few bucks more i can get a motor i know was built well and comes with a 2 year 12,000 mile warranty. Well I am looking at this crate motor from Derebery Performance. Here are the specs

350 ci 400 HP 430 TQ $2,995.00

-Balanced Dynamically
-9.5:1 Compression
-6000 RPM Limiter
-Hyperutectic Coated Pistons
-Hyd, Roller Camshaft 218/228 @.050 with .502/.502 lift
-Vortec Hand Ported Cylinder Heads
-Dual Plane Air Gap Intake Manifold
Idle

link to website http://www.dpmpower.us/smallblock.htm third one on the page.

So my thing is would you go for the crate motor or just do the top end and cam swap on my current motor that was built by bubba.

Thanks in advance for the help.

For $3,842.95 summit price the GM ZZ4 comes all brand new
aluminum heads. Add carb, plug wires, plugs and go.

they may have a good motor makes a litlle more power cost is
around $900.00 less but the GM is an all new motor, not a rebuild
of old block crank and heads. the alumunum heads would be nice.

I don't know where you are going to find that much power for that price. Seems like a good deal to me.

to feed 400 hp 770 street avenger. 750/780 cfm vacuum carbs and dual plane manifold on 302/327/350s. Dual plane manifolds work well with a bigger carb.

$2500 for the top end seems a little steep. Scoggins Dickey sells an upgraded Vortec package for $950 including new bolts and gaskets. Add to that $170 for a new cam kit and $xxx for new valve covers. I'm not sure if the XE262 cam would require extra lift from stock Vortecs. The XE268 would need the springs/retainers changed. Swapping heads is not that big of a deal, should take about a day or two if not in a big rush. Going to a Vortec package will require a little modifications on items like throttle brackets. Whether you go with a complete package or not, there are alsway the little things that pop up.

I just bought this same motor tonight from Yearone. Two to three week delivery time frame. This motor was dyno’d @ 400+ with a 750 CFM carb. As for your comment about rednecks, who do think started all this horsepower stuff? We maybe dumb, but we ain’t stupid!!!

Take no offense to the redneck remark. I agree I am a redneck but atleast i have enough know how to know what works. The guys that built my motor where just dumb they did not know how to match everything up they thought that just because they put a big cam in and it loped really good it had 400hp what they did not know was that 882 heads are crap and thought they were a good performance head. Basically they thought that thoses heads and factory pistons gave me 10.5 compression thats what they told me the motor had because they had my heads supposedly surfaced to a 64cc. Yeah thats a lot of metal to take off of a 76cc chamber head that is prone to crack. That said they thought that bigger is better and the louder the faster. So pleaes do not take offense of the redneck statement.

If I was buying a fancy new crate small block from GM I'd have to put fuel injection on it. Might as well.
