Was finishing up the vacuum hose part of my reassembly and went to mount the "radiator support" (1981)... that's the shaft that fits between the lower radiator and the very nose of the frame extension and nose of the body. The shaft also holds the vacuum cannister.
Anyway, as I was about to put the screw to the top of the support it made me wonder if there wasn't a rubber bushing (spacer?) between the frame extension and the body. I looked through the AIM but don't see anything. Am not finding anything in my parts bin either, but it sure seems like there should be something in that connection to cushion the fiberglass front from the frame extension.
Am I missing something. My AIM (page 468) doesn't show anything but.... Anyone got there 80-81-82 torn down far enough to see?
How thick is the rubber piece? Does it look like the other body mounts? And does anyone have an idea what it's called? I bought a body mount kit from Ecklers (bolts and mounts) but this piece wasn't in it...
Hmm, thats bad news because I probly bought the same kit. I won't be hme until next week tho.
If you did get the same kit I got, then no, the 9th mount isn't there. I got 1 - 4 on both sides (with bolts), but no nose rubber or bolt. I surfed around through a number of Vette parts websites but never found so much as a reference to it. (Course I don't know exactly what it's called either.) Guess the assumption is that there isn't much wear at that contact point....
Here's what I did... stopped at my local tire store (in this case a Les Schwab) and got a piece of recap rubber. It's basically just a flat hard rubber. I cut it into a donut (thank God for cutoff wheels), slid it between the body and frame extention and ran a schedule 8 bolt up through the middle.
