Maybe you guys can help me out. Cruise hasn't worked since I bought the car, but it was never a high priority to fix it, until......my speedometer stopped working. Figured out my transducer had seized, so I got a remanufactured one and replace it. Speedometer works fine now, but cruise still doesn't work. All vacuum lines are in place and OK and so is the fuse......
So, can y'all give me an idea of what to check next?
There is a trouble shooting procedure to follow, which I believe came on a sheet of paper which came with the rebuilt transducer I installed in my '81. I just don't have it with me right now. Can't remember if my Haynes Manual is much help with trouble shooting this system. Are you certain vacuum hoses are all OK? Suggest you 'pull' vacuum on the system by using a hand held vacuum pump, if you haven't already done so, to verify that you don't have a vacuum problem. I found that I had a kinked vacuum hose under drivers side dash, which is routed to the emergency headlight release switch, during my repair to the cruise control system. Suggest you replace all old/hard vacuum hoses with new, just to eliminate a bad/leaking hose from the problem possibilities. I do remember getting at the cruise control wiring harness under/by the steering column, and going through a trouble shooting procedure to verify that the electrical portion of the cruise control system was in fact operational. If you don't get additional help on this question, I'll see if I can remember to look for the trouble shooting procedure when I get home tonight.
Make sure you make the ground connection at the transducer. Check the swithes at the brake pedal and clutch (if have one). They trigger off the cruise. Inspect the actuator at the carb throttle linkage. I'll send you by email the trouble shooting guide.
I need to amend my earlier reply in one regard, since what Dsmith said above, reminded me that the kinked hose I discovered under the dash was by the steering column, and was connected to the switch which is connected to and activated by the brake pedal, to disengage the cruise control when you apply the brakes. I erroneously stated in my first post that the hose connected to the headlight pull switch below the steering column, must have been another of my 'senior moments', sorry about that.
My cruise didn't work when I first got my car either. Had my mechanic check it out and it was as simple as the cable wasn't even connected to the throtle linkage. The retaining clip had come off and the cable had vibrated off the linkage. A new retaining clip and my cruise works great now.
I don't know if this will help you, but I've found that the chain, the one that looks like the chain from a dog tag, must be tight. After so many years, my chain became really loose. After tightening it, my cruise worked a lot better.

Re: Cruise control troubleshooting? (jerryp58)
When I first bought my 79, the cruise didn`t work either. What I found was the ground disconnected. I temporarilly connected it to the brake booster and my cruise worked great until the transducer lost its mind. Make sure you have a good ground to work with.
If anyone has a troubleshooting guide for the cruise I would really appreciate a copy of it. Other than my clock, that is the only thing not working on my car at the moment, knock on my wooden head :smash:
