I just put in the new stub axle and there is still about .015 of play. I would like to get this closer to nil while I can. I checked Mcmaster-carr and there is nothing in the exact diameter.
Are there shims designed to sit under the C-clip that any vendor sells? I see Tom's has 'Super Side shims' P#SSS-12. Is that what I need or are those for something else? I will definately give Tom's a call.
I got the stub axles out with the pumpkin in the car. It was pretty easy since that has all been gone through a few years ago, but still a lot of work.
Did you check your posi clutches for wear? A new clutch pack may take some of the end play out.
everything except the stubs have less then 20k miles on them. I would expect them to still be fresh. Don't really want to get into taking the whole thing apart, just wanted to put in new stubs to get the play down to a minimum.
If the posi clutches have been set up stock( springs, plates, and wide backlash) adding new yokes will cut down the endplay but the other guys are right you may not get where you expect.
Ie: If you have over .060 and a stock posi setup and swap the yokes I'd expect to be in the .015-.030 range. Of course this varie with every unit but if the posi if properly tuned I find new yokes fall in between .000-.007 +/- .003"
