Search 81 computers.

Until then, yes. Ditch the 'puter. But you must also unhook alot of chit, and change out the carb if original. Drop the smog and Cat. Add a new HEI, and your in business!!

Its a lot of work, why do you want to change and what do you want the car to do. The short answer is Yes yoou can do that, New Carb, new dist, trany lockup up rework, etc, rather a long list of mods needed. That said its not necessary. SO what do you want to acomplish, where do you live, smog laws?

Basically the same as Six and MVM have said. If you're not racing it or anything like that then it's not that bad of a system. If you want to mod the crap out of it, it's rather easy to convert to a non-computerized setup. If you want to be different than most then get a computer from a mid '80's truck or camaro with the E4ME setup and you can reprogram it.

Lots of choices, you can build a 300+ hp engine with the ECM, E4ME and dist in place. Want suiggestions? We got em. A1 Sensei has it running now, so does UKPaul and some others. I'll be on the road again by xmas
Funny thing is, you need the same engine components to make real HP (Heads, Intake, Exhaust, Cam) and keep the ECM. Or you can get the same stuff PLUS Carb, Dist, and a whole lot of fartin with the electrics.
For me, stock 81 carb, dist, new heads (AFR) Intake, (Air Gap) Cam (?) duals and Magnaflows.
