I was running about 160 km/hour or 100 mph last night on a rough secondary road ... while dodging holes you find the car responds sometimes too quickly.
Norval,
You ARE a trip!!! Definitely one person whose posts I look forward to finding daily!!
A man of my own heart, you certainly DO STUFF that many just fantasize about! Not to mention the great insight you often provide on some of your ingenious fabrication artwork!
This pic was on another thread from a member.
The hoses are close to the headers.
I know my manual steering box was very close to my hooker super comp side pipe headers.
I'm sure the extreme heat from the headers will cause some fluid boil and fatique.
I am considering the jeep install but would put some sparkplug heat socks on the power steering hoses to help prevent the headers from burning the fluid up. Probably double layer the sparkplug socks.
Anyone have a jeep box with sidepipes? pics?
anyone run into problems from header heat?
Play it safe....yr 2000 and up Jeep steering box

wow that things a monster....i'm almost sure i will have header clearance problems with my hooker super comp side pipes if the pipes themselves are dimpled to clear the vette stock steering pump.
I don't know if the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee boxes are different...but the GC box in my garage waiting to go in the 77 looks just like the one in my '00 Cherokee.

While it is bigger it is not thicker. If you go to the web site that has been posted a few times you will see the thickness of the box is the same as stock. Supposedly it sticks no further out from the frame then stock.
I inserted a steel plate in my frame so I actually gained alot of extra clearance.
There is a world of difference between a Cherokee and a Grand Cherokee steering system. They are two completely different vehicles.
You definately want the 1999 through 2004 Grand Cherokee power steering gear if you are going to attempt a conversion. It is the more modern Saginaw 600 gear. It is the only power Saginaw gear that has a mounting scheme that is at least close to the Corvette C2/C3 manual gear mounting.
I think that some people get confused with the previous generation Grand Cherokee power gear (1992 1/2 through 1998). It was a fast ratio Saginaw 700 gear. This gear was a direct bolt-in replacement for the old slow ratio Saginaw power gears that were used extensively on the 1960s and 70s GM muscle cars. So it has gained popularity with that generation of enthusiasts. Again this earlier version gear (and any of the Cherokee or Wrangler power gears) have no chance of fitting a C2/C3.

Good, I had originally planned on using the '97 GC box I have for my '71 Charger but I had not tested compatability. Once it's put back together I'll put it in and see how it looks. Good info.

Norval, Any chance you could snap a pic of your jeep box in your car?
I too was thinking about reinforcing the frame around the steering box to avoid some flexing.
Is the side loading of these power steering units really that noticable while driving? I could understand you'd notice a difference b/w the steering box vs. rack&pinion if you were on a xcross track putting extreme loads in cornering.
Going to give Tom at corvette steering a call today and see what he's got.
When you call him, have your credit card ready. He charges $50 for questions
Tom is grumpy but his kits are good. He is not much on talking to customers but he will take care of you. If you buy from him he will give customer satisfaction, just don't call with dumb questions without buying.
