Default O2 Sensor placement

Guys, I am replacing my gauges with dakota digital and I have an extra hole to fill. I was thinking of an Air Fuel mixture sensor gauge. I currently have true duals but I am going to add a "H" pipe to the exhaust. Where should I install the O2 sensor. I would like to add it to the exhaust after the headers and use something like this.

Or should I install the bung in the center of the "H" pipe?

Thanks
Mike

I have mine in the right hand tube about 10 inches back from the header collector. This gets a good mix of all the cylinders on the one bank. If you adjust your carb evenly and the motor is in good tune the other bank should be the same. Also put in in the 9 12 or 3 oclock position or anywhere in between. Mine is in the 3 oclock position. You don't want it at the bottom collecting moisture from the exhaust.

These are Hooker sidemounts, but this is where I installed my O2 sensor for my EFI system. Just about midposition on the collector at 3 oclock.

Is the sensor heated (wideband)? WB sensors can be mounted anywhere, whereas standard sensors should be within the hot area of the exhaust to make them function properly.

Not sure if the sensor is heated or not. I guess I can always put them in the pipe just after the collector and monitor the one side.

Heated sensers are eather 3 wire or 4 wire. I'm going with a 4 wire for my TPI aft of the collector. Just a simple ground, possitive and the normal 2 wires for the senser, this allows the 02 to heat to the proper temp to function.

The heated sensors have a unit which powers them. If you don't have this, then your sensors are "standard". I'd put them as close to the junction of the 4 pipes in the collector as I could. I think the H pipe would be too far downstream...

If it's a non-heated sensor then Some people have had problems with the O2 sensors on '81's (oh, really?!!!) when they've installed them too far back in the exhaust system. the sensor cools down at low revs and starts giving false readings. I fitted mine in the reducer on the d.side Headers. Summit sell pairs of reducers with the bungs already welded in.
