Default New guy here needing some help

Well after nine years of a Vetteless garage, I finally broke down and bought a 72. She needs some work, but I get a chill up my spine everytime I open the garage door and see her there. I've been following the forum here for a few weeks and can't believe the luck I had finding it. I want to do as much work in the car as possible, so I will probably be picking brains here for quite some time. One of the first things I want to get working on is the doors. they have some rust on the bottom side and want to replace or repair. I have located a pair of doors off a 74 that are power window, same as mine, so my question is, will this door fit my car and will all the electronic connections mate up? What should I expect to pay, fair price, for the pair? Also, can these be repaired instead of replaced? Thanks for any help you can spare me.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you are ready to make a commitment to your car because it will require alot of attention for awhile. As far as the doors, if they are rusted through the metal I would replace them. If it is light surface rust they could be repaired. I don't know what doors are worth but I'm sure someone on the forum can help you. I don't know where you live but if you can possibly make it to Carlisle next week you will see more Corvette parts than you can imagine.

thanks for the welcome. definatly will be spending alot of time on the car. When I bought the car, I figured one of the most fun things would be working on it and fixing it up.

Paid 125 each for doors for my 76...(one was a 76 the other came off a 78)....That however was 6-7 years go

Sold the one door off the 76 (good metal but the fiberglass was loose from the bottom for 75 bucks...also 6-7 years ago.

I do not know what doors fit a 72...( I have one too)
my bet would be that they fit...

A good body shop can look it up for you ..

The '74 doors will probably swap, but why go to all the expense and trouble? A door with glass and all the hardware is heavy, bulky, and a PITA.

Unless they have rusted through, your doors are probably repairable.

Thanks for all the welcomes and advice. there is a hole rusted through in each door, and I've come across a couple for sale. still debating on what to do. would love to tackle the project myself, but how complex is a door change on this car and are special tools needed. I can also get a couple of guys to help out with this or use an engine puller to hold them in place.

Also, IIRC, one advantage to using a door from a later model year is that you'll get the extra side-crash reinforcement plate (I believe GM started using the extra plate in the doors starting with the 1973 model year).

Welcome to the world of vettes!

In these vettes you will be very lucky to find one that doesn't have rust. If the 74 doors are "free" of rust then get them, but it's unlikely that they will be completely "rust free". You will need to paint the doors anyway, so your best option would be to take your current doors and repair them...strip them down to metal and remove any rust, fiberglass any holes, smooth em out and paint them.

We need pictures...even if it's no showroom stud...before and after are great!
