Default New headlight switch or Old one?

With the help of every one here I was able to diagnose my dash light short tonight. In the process I bought a new headlight switch that I ended up using to help diagnos the problem. The question is, when I plugged the new switch in, it would heat up and glow red when the electrical system had a short. The old switch would never get hot or glow at all when I was testing. I thought this meant that the old switch was fried. Now that I fixed the short both headlight switches work and I am debating keeping the original switch because I felt it was safer. The new one I bought was from Eckler's. The old one was bought from GM 10 years ago. Which one should I keep?

If the new one has been "glowing red", it's probably been damaged to some degree even though it still seems to work.

I'd say put the old one back in (even though it's 10 years old I bet it'll probably last at least another 20). And I'd call Eckler's and tell them that the new switch is defective - see if you can get a refund (plus they need to be told that they might be selling a product with a safety issue).

BTW, you might want to do some more checking of your wiring. All of the wiring going to the headlight switch is fused, so the switch should never have been able to "glow red" - the fuse should have blown way before that happened.

Best wishes!

Are you sure the wiring to the headlight switch is fused? I always thought there was a circuit breaker in the switch.

I agree that is what scares me! Funny thing the old never got hot or glowed no matter what!

I also changed all the bulbs and checked it out and everything is working with old switch.
