Anybody using a timing gear set? As opposed to a chain. Impressions? Is it worth the extra $$ and are you using noisey or quiet and what is the expected life span?

Don't do it! Even the quiet gear drives whine ... & motorheads in the know will roll eyes. Most imortant: They induce a large force pushing crank snout DOWN into main cap ... not good. Chains pull snout UP into the block webbing (much stronger than a cap). Just get a good quality timing set. No need to spend more than $100 ... even $50 will do great.
Sorry I had been PMing another SCarolinian about His cable TV issues got you guys confused!
Do you have any good machine shops in Timmonsville? I am looking to have some work done on a 350 block that I have and I dont feel like going all the way to Conway for Jordans Performance, although they did a great job on my BB.

No good machine shop here. Blocks & balancing go to Jordan. Crank work done by Tim at Scarborough in Hartsville. Tim also does good balancing but seems Dennis Jordan may be a bit better now. Tim still is the BEST around on anything else crank related ... bar none
Alotta racers also swear by Jimmy Naylor over by Sumter ... I have no personal experience w/ Naylor ... 'cept we've outrun his stuff & his stuff's outrun ours.
Don't recall where you're at Don ... Richland Co?
*edit* ... we so far out in the country we cannot get cable ... cannot get DSL either ... only dialup ... no clue as to when that could change either. Well ... TWC did say they would bring it down the road ... for about $90K!
I have one on my beater big block El Camino. It just adds to the overall effect of that car-loud,ugly and obnoxious, its just perfect. However many will say they should not be on a high performance engine and I agree, but is kinda fun to give them guys something to yap about.

I am in NW Richland County near Chapin. Moved here about 2 years ago from Horry county. I have been looking for a good reputable machine shop here in Columbia but so far it seems like there is no such animal. I know Jordan gets a lot of his work from the guys that race at Myrtle Beach Speedway but I dont think there is a track in Columbia is there? I am told I could get NAPA to have the block sent somwhere to have it done but I just as soon take it somewhere myself and eliminate the middle man. I came accross a web site of somebody with a speed shop in Lexington but when I clicked the links on the content it kept coming up with "coming soon" or something like that, so I didnt persue it. What kind of racing do you do circle track or drag?

Thanks for the advice, I guess I will stick with my double roller.

Asphalt circle track. I think there's still a dirt track up there ... don't hold me to it ... but I-20 Speedway around Bateburg? ... BUT, their site ... http://www.i20speedway.com/index.htm ... racing most Sat nites ... BUT, indicates track's closed until further notice???? Says to call Billy Hallman cell 532-7456 ... I dunno? Maybe Hallman can suggest a good machineshop up that way?
Also, check these asphalt circle track racers sites: www.dannyefland.com ... and ... www.jordanandersonracing.com ... both reside around Cola ... (efland@Irmo, anderson@Forest Acres) ... maybe through them you might find a good machineshop up your way. IIRC ... both of 'em are running crate motors ... but someone associated with them should know where a good shop is. As good as efland is running, me thinks there's a REAL good possibility some shop's seen innards of his "sealed" crate motor.
I hate making the drive to Conway too ... not as far as from Chapin ... but I do it.
