o.k. gent's my fuel pump is starting to lose pressure.. only getting 4 1/2 lb's pressure..it's the stock pump on my coupe, and would like to see what y'all would recomend as a replcement..would like to keep the vapor return line, but will consider others without. what would i have to do if i went without return line. i have a 500 hp. 383 stroker, and i think it's starving for fuel at the upper rpm range. 5500and above. would also like to stay with a mechanical pump... my fuel cap is a sealed cap...
Go with the Carter Mechanical Street pump. On a carbed car, pressure is less important than volume. These come in at 120 gph and produce from 5.5 to 7.5 psi, and will easily supply 500hp,..about $75 plus you'll have to go to your speed shop and purchase two brass fittings, then it's a direct bolt-in swap. This pump can be phased or 'clocked' to make your stock fuel lines work and this pump can be rebuilt,..money well spent.
These don't have the return line, so I'd remove the whole R-line and cap the bung at the tank. These return lines were used to combat vapor lock,..they kept fuel circulating through the main line,..not that it gets hot in a Vette engine bay or under the car.
What about the Carter "Muscle Car Mechanical Fuel Pumps" ? They are a less expensive line. They list 2 different fuel pumps for a 1970 smallblock corvette, the 6106 says it is for the Qjet and the 6120 says it is for the Holley. I can't find out if one has a fuel return outlet and the other doesn't, but that would be my guess as to the difference between the pumps and why one is for the Qjet and the other the Holley.
