Default Gas Tank Leak

1980 L48 50K miles

I have fuel leaking out of my gas tank forward right corner-under the support beam. The tank itself has very little rust visible from the outside. I did a search and have learned a lot, but I have a few questions.

1. Where can I get a new tank for a 1980? I do not see any listings for 1980s.

2. Is it safe to repair the old one if I only have small pin holes? And does anyone have an instructions?

3. The information says to lower the tank a couple of inches and disconnect the lines- Is this at the sending unit and is this when reaching thru the filler hole in the body?

Thanks for any help

There is no aftermarket replacement gas tank available yet for the 78/82 Corvette. I don't think it can be repaired as there is a hard plastic liner inside the tank. It eventually dries out then cracks. You will need to find one at the salvage yard. When mine eventually fails, I'll most likely have a stainless one custom made from "Rock Valley". You send them your old one (if they don't have the pattern yet) and they will custom make a replacement out of stainless steel. Any used tank you buy now will suffer the same fate soon because of how old they are. I wish the aftermarket would step in soon.
Your third question is correct....that is how you would disconnect it after first draining the tank. I can send you a picture of the fuel tank on the chassis without the body on if you want to see a more detailed picture.

Thanks

How much for a stainless?
I called Corevette Central and they sell a repair kit, that once you have cleaned the inside you splash this epoxy on the inside to seal the bladder. Then I would go after the pin holes on the outside with solder?? Or do the outside first then the inside??

Has anyone used these repair kits?

Can I solder the outside without hurting the bladder?

The stainless route is very expensive....I would guess around $700. I think those kits are just meant for steel unlined tanks. I don't think it would stick to the plastic liner. from what I understand...you can't repair a plastic liner. Most local Radiator shops in your area can provide that service....phone them up and ask their advice....but do mention the plastic liner....not rubber as in earlier Corvettes (that shrink).

You can find a used one. That is the way to go. I would post a want add here on the forum for one. Someone out here has one they will be willing to part with. I have seen them for as little as $200 and as much as $450.00. I would also look on ebay. There is a salvage yard in Southern Mississippi that may have one and would probably ship it to you.
