Default Need help please...

My '78 pulls to the left when driving but pulls SHARPLY to right when braking. Also, the left wheel develops a burning smell and gets extremely hot.
Another problem:When engine is warm a green drip appears to be coming from under the coolant reservoir only when engine is on.
Any answers?Thanks

You have bad brakes.

You have a serious brake problem. Stop driving and do a break job. New Stainless Steel sleeved calipers, new pads, and replace the stock rubber lines with braided lines.

You're coolant level may be high, and your resevoir may have a leak. Possibly some slight overheating as well.

And you might have a hosed wheel bearing somewhere. Time for some maintenance. Check the calipers, the flex lines, and the hard lines. Since it's pulling to one side, you can rule out the M/C as a problem.

Great point. When was the last time you checked wheel bearings? Wouldn't be a bad idea to pull the front bearings and re-pack them, replacing if needed.

The top of the coolant reservoir doesn't seal very well and I found that sloshing would cause some fluid to end up leaking out the cap. I put a rubber glove in as a baffle and it went away.

That a perm fix or is that until you design a different solution. Got any pics of that?

Should be printed on the tire. If not, and no one here knows, just call a tire shop. They'll tell you.

actually... the burning smell sounds to me like one of your passenger side calipers is not dissengaging. If this is after it warms up... it might be a collapsed brake line. You might be able to test this by going out... getting the brakes warm and going home and removing both right side tires to check for drag. Then let it cool and see if the drag goes away.

I have read a few posts on this... they changed the hose and it fixed the problem.
Sounds like you could have a few combinations of distribution block problems... bad calipers or lines.

As for the coolant... hows your temp? Is it high? ... you might have just overfilled the coolant. Or it might be time for a new radiator cap... and there is constant seepage into the overflow.

in any case... good luck with the brake problem... it happens to alot of us!

, KINDA... It pulls to the left while driving because the driver side front brake caliper is dragging, probably due to a clogged rubber hose. BUT, it pulls severely to the right when braking because the drivers side is ONLY dragging, not fully engaging, but the pass side engages fully. Been there . Open a bleeder on the drivers side front when it's still hot, bet it releases but if you try to bleed it you'll get nothing.

Just saying that with a really bad pull there may be more than one thing going on. Sometimes a solid line gets pinched or rusts up, too.

Are the ones under the body hard to get to if they have to be replaced?

You mean the long ***** that runs along the frame? I'm finally going to change it when I lift the body to change the mounts. I've had the line hanging on my wall for 6 years.

You really cant go by what the tire says for PSI as that is MAX pressure

My 73' says 20 LBS all around on the door tag
I run them @ 30Lbs all around and the wear is perfect.

Rotate and balance every 6K miles

Yeah, but that sticker is for a 30 year old tire. What if you bought new Z-rated 5 ply kevlar band tires that want 35 lbs instead of 20. Then you'd be destroying the new tires because your door sticker said 20.

My BFG 235 70 R15's say 35 Lbs MAX

I run them @ 30 Lbs all around

Okay, so a different point needs to be made. The sticker shouldn't be considered unless you are running stock tires, or like stock tires. If you have aftermarket tires, you have to follow the manufacturer's recommended air pressure. They post a max, and you stepped it down a little. Perfect. Couldn't have done it better. But looking at that sticker could cause a problem for someone that has newwer or bigger or higher performance tires, who thinks that sticker has the info he needs.

It's a stainless line, and I just looked at it last night. I'll blow it out before I install it.

If a mouse can get inside a brake line, I'd really like to see that mouse. He'd be so tiny...the Bug would have fun with it.

Don't you have a mouse phobia?

J/K

I hate my garage. It gets so humid in there that even when it's closed, parts I have waiting for a project get rusty. Like those LT1 dogbones I showed you. Hey by the way, you know a good place to buy a couple more of those? I bought the ones I have on Ebay, but can't seem to find them anymore.
