Default Power steering components on 1980

I replaced all with new parts(cylinder, valve, hoses)except the Pump....Now my steering is still very stiff as if I don't have power steering...My question is,,,,Is it still OK to drive it?is it putting more stress on the valve and cylinder since my pump isn't working properly?I don't want to ruin my new parts.
I wasn't planning on replacing the pump this year as I am close to store it for thew winter.Figured I'd replace it this winter along with a new exaust...
What do you guys think??

I can tell you whats wrong .....usually.

I hope you still have the old pump. Remove the spring from it and use it in the new pump. It is located in the assy. where the pressure hose attaches to the back of the pump. Remove the hose and then the fitting assy and it will come right out. The problem is the new spring is way too stiff.

I haven't replaced the pump,I'm still using the old one.

The reason I didn't replce the pump is I thought it was still good. The rest of the components were leaking oil as hell and I thought it would solve my problem of stiff steering...

So it was stiff before the changes?
If so, you got a bad pump. I guess you checked the juice to make sure its full correct?

Yes it's full...I know it has to be the pump.Probably the pump suffered from oil a couple of times before I bought it which resulted in a used up pump.....It's the only other thing left to change, but I wonder if it's stressful on the new components if I drive it anyway........

Hmm, I wouldn't think so, but I would just go ahead and get it done. Take a couple hrs and you get to drive it some before putting it away.

well I've been driving it for a month now with the new parts but was curious if I should or should not be driving it.....When I turn the steering,I need both hands on it....Main thing is it doesn't leak anymore....But don't want to screw up new parts.
I know the vavle gets pretty hot...is it normal that it comes really hot?

Sorry, me head on crooked... ....May be the spring and valve I spoke of is stuck. Remove and clean it before replacing the pump.

that is the bypass and if it is stuck it will cause overheat

you basically have no Hyd pressure, won't hurt anything. Pull the pump, take it apart, clean it up and put it back together. No cost, and you might fix it. You need a new pump
