Well, tried to start my engine for the 1st time today. However, I can't get a spark at the plug. What could be wrong? The starter is cranking great. The battery line to the distributor (HEI style) is showing hot, but nothing coming out of the plug. The entire distributor assembly is new.

Thanks for any suggestions.
I'm soo bummed
You have the 12 volts on the correct terminal-correct?(not the tach terminal)
thanks, yes. all wires are confirm in the right locations. the distributor cap is labeled for each wire. i tested each wire and they check good. the pink wire is hot and to the battery post. the green wire is to the tach post.
Check the harness that connects the coil in the cap to the body of the distributor, they may not be fully seated. Also using a test light, verify that the metal body of the distributor is making a good ground. Clip the alligator lead to the dist, and put the probe to the positive lug of the alternator, the light should light. If not check your engine to chassis grounds.

This checks out also...it seems that I'm grounded well, getting power to the dist and through it, but I'm not getting a spark.........
I figured this would be easy not having any computers to deal with.
Just a thought here: we recently had a no start problem on a project and found that the 12V wire that we ran to the HEI was hot with the ignition on but NOT while trying to start. Check the wire in "on" AND while the starter is turning.
Maybe a bad ignition switch as Daffy led into...if the switch has a bad contact at the start position, the ign will still work but no voltage when the key is moved out of ign and into start. Maybe?

On that old system the coil was fed from the starter term. R while cranking-the ign.switch might not feed until you release to the run position Hmmmm I'll go get a switch and check it.edit-if your using the old 68 switch on the dash-the run term is dead on cranking-you can use your old wire coming from R term. on starter or just run a new wire from R term. to batt term on dist----good call Daffy

i have reason to believe all is original, as things are solidly rusted in place and many wires are spliced and others are falling apart...plan to replace sometime in the near future i hope.
Maybe a plugs not in correct... I had no spark and found to be i knocked out a little plug behind the carb..... check all your plugs and connectors... you never know
thanks...yes, i've gone around the engine compartment a couple of times looking for items that seem to be out of place
1 item is a large black wire, about the same size as the starter main power wire, that is cut off. is comes our from under the right engine mount towards the front of the car, and about 6" was cut off, as i have the piece that was cut off in a pile of crap i was given with the car. i'm hoping it is just a grounding wire. the engine is well grounded however, as everything's been checking fine, but i need to fix all of these wires cut off or damaged.
