If the engine runs with the jumper then look for the original wire coming from the R term on starter solenoid or run a new one and connect it to(or with) the pink wire that you have on the batt term on dist
Well, tried to start my engine for the 1st time today. However, I can't get a spark at the plug. What could be wrong?
The new condenser inside the new distributor could possibly be defective. Yes, sometimes even new parts can be defective. Try replacing the new condenser with the old and see if that solves the problem.
I ran into a similar problem years ago. I had installed a new distributor shaft and of course, while I was at it I replaced all the distributor component parts with new. Experienced the same problem. No spark at the plugs. I discussed the problem with my Dad and he suggested replacing the new condenser with the old one. Sure enough; problem solved. True story worth sharing.
Thanks everyone! It seems those of you stating that new dist's can be bad are right. A co-worker brought in an old one, same style HEI, it even had 1 post slightly bent and it fired! Then it stopped! No worries...it seems I have bad grounds from the battery to the frame and the frame to the block. I bought new cables and will install tomorrow and re-fire!!! I'll post my progress. THANKS!!!!
And the brief second fire gave me a hint at the sweet sound of the Hooker Comp headers! Sweet
Thanks everyone! Well, we found the culprit, and the dist works afterall...we got it running and noticed that the tach was not connected. when we went to connect it the engine started to stall...there must be a short somewhere. Anyhow, I have a short video of the start-up if someone would like to post it here for me...??? I can email it to you to post. It sounds SWEET!!! Not a single backfire either, if you can believe that! I was waiting and waiting. I had the timing set almost perfect and it fired right up! I couldn't imagine working on a newer car with computers!
when i try to connect the tach wire to the dist it will kill the engine. therefore there must be a short in the dist wire somewhere. i'll need to trace the wire from the dist back to the tach in the cluster gauge to see if it came loose or if the wire's coating was rubbed through causing it to short out on something. without it hooked up it runs like it just came out of the showroom!!! i need to get an exhaust so i can fine tune the rockers, as it's a bit loud to be able to hear if any are knocking. a friend also has a timing light that we will use for fine tuning once i return from my business trip to china...i leave sat am (9/2) and should return home hopefully before fri (9/15)...i'm gonna go crazy not being able to work on the car!!!
