I have two carbs for my '79 - one is a Rochester #17059216 and the other is a Carter #17059216. Which one would be technically "correct" for my car. The number reflects they are both the "right" carb - but the question is, what would have been put on the car in St. Louis originally - Carter or Rochester? I think the Rochester is a re-manufactured from maybe 15 years ago - not sure though. Ideas anyone?
My 79 L48 auto with air has a Carter on it. Its a 15000 mile car and
positive its orig. carb. Also have 79 L82 and it has orig. Rochester.
Makes sense. When I bought my car from the first owner, with 72k miles, it had a Rochester on it but he gave me a Carter in a box and said that was the original - but I had no way of really knowing. So maybe the early '79 L48 had a Carter and the '79 L82 was built with a Rochester? I guess I will rebuild the Carter and switch them out...unless someone thinks either way is potentially correct.
Carter made the castings when Rochester was behind in some cases so it could be correct. Look for a date codes but be aware that Rochester uses a Julian code where Carter used a letter for the production month and a single digit for the year.

My car was #429 built in 08/78 - probably third day of production - so how would I decipher the date codes on the carb? I assume the carb date should match the manufacture date of the car, correct? What would be the correct date codes for a Carter and/or Rochester for a Vette built in 08/78?

Rochester carbs use a 4-digit sysem. The first 3 digits for the day of the year and the last digit for the year the carb was manufactured. "1" is January 1st, "365" is December 31st (except for leap years). The last digit is the year.
Carter used a 2 digit system with a letter for the month ("A" was January) and a single digit for the year the carb was built. No "I" was used here so they skipped it and used "J" for September.
Check your dates and see which one makes sense. I bet one is a lot closer than the other one.
