Red clip to the negative side of the coil (the side that has the wire going to the distributor). Black to ground.

I connect the way Lars does. Red to coil hot, black to ground. I use the ignition shielding bracket for my ground. It works and it's convenient.

On mine... red goes to battery source, black to ground and green to distributor terminal on the coil. It is a tach & dwell meter.
