Quick update. I was having trouble with the speedometer. Disconnected the cable and ran the drill backwards to see if it was working OK. Ran at a consistent 40 mph which was higher than it was quiting at. That sends me to the other end. Pulled the adapter for the speedometer gear in the trans. Everything looked ok so I decided to see if the gear was meshing ok. Well you know what happened, Murphy says I have to drop the gear inside the trans. I was going to wait until this winter to fix this problem, looks like I get to have the joy of pulling the trans next week. One of these days I will stop before I get to as long as you are here.
If anyone knows an easy way to go fishing in the trans for the gear with out pulling it please let me know.
While I have not had the particular pleasure of dealing with this issue, some combination of a borescope and one of those spring loaded claw retreval tools??
BUMMER! Been there!! (See below). I wasn't able to fish it out after trying for days...bite the bullet and take it apart. Refresh all the seals for the extension housing while you're at it. May work to your advantage to solve your speedo dilemna...
I had this problem with a chevy van a few years back. The gear is much bigger than the return oil hole for the fluid going from the tailshaft housing to the main tranny body. I left mine in there for several years and never had any problems. When I junked the van I removed the motor and trans, for future use. (After all it was a 4-bolt.) Decided to see if the plastic gear was in there, or got ground up, I removed the tailshaft. Low and behold there it was just sitting in the bottom of the housing and not a scratch on it. So I figured it sat in the bottom and never wandered around. The gear is of good size and can't make It's way back to the main tranny case. F.Y.I.

Thanks, I think I will pull it to see why my speedometer was not working. That and Murphy is my guardian angel. If it can find a way to break it will break on me.
I dropped my gear into the tailshaft housing about a month ago. I bent a piece of wire & just fished around until I got the gear scraped back to where I could see (and ultimately grab) it. Took about 1/2 hour of work, but it was better than pulling the tranny.
Those pictures in Wuttin's third post help put everything into perspective. The gear isn't more than about 6" in front of the hole, so that's just how far the wire "fishing pole" needs to go.
Good luck!

I think I might go fish. Got out my haynes and it looks like a little more work to pull the tail shaft on a muncie. you have to disconect the reverse shifter and a few other things. Going to get a small mirror at lunch tomorrow and see if I can get a peak.
I'm going to Lexington in the Morning to see my son. Won't be back until Monday. I'm going to try and look at it tonight, but you know what they say about best laid plans. If I can't fish it out and have to remove the tail shaft I will be taking pictures and posting them.
