Default Hooker sidepipe mufflers

Suggestions for other mufflers. I just bought a used sidepipe setup but it came with the hooker reverse flow mufflers which I heard are very restrictive to the engine. Hooker offers the glasspak and now a straight through design muffler. I know the spiral turbos are highly recommended, but any other recommendations. Noise is not a problem, I don't really have close neighbors.

I have 'sweet thunder' mufflers, they sound great and are 2 1/4". I'll eventually upgrade to Hooker's 2.5" mufflers because the sweet thunders will be restrictive once my 383 is built.

Very likely the 2.5" Maxflows. They're only $140, less than half of what they charge for the baffles.

I am thinking about making my own baffles, a 1" pipe and some 4" OD washers cut and bent to shape should do the trick .... ....

I am about to install the mufflers in my side pipes and saw this thread. I bought the 21003 mufflers that are supposed to be for the BB. Hole is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and only goes half way down. I am somewhat concerned with noise which is why I bought the reverse flows. Which mufflers fit and won't deafen the riders or the lookers and won't choke the engine? Who sells the sweet thunder?

i've got hooker side mounts and i tried everything and only when i got to make a small custom lightweight muffler i had some good results, all other mufflers were in some way restrictive, specially at high rev (i mean over 4.500/5000 rpm), actually what i think is that maybe is the hooker side header to be the main restrictive factor!! could it be? some people say that the header is too long and have a to sharp bend...i'm going to get rid of this sistem any, it looks the business but does not flow the business

I made a set of inserts from some chambered mufflers. I bought them from this company and modified them to fit. They now sell pre-made inserts. I like the ones I made. Sound good and the car runs much better than the reverse flows.

These are what I am looking at. Do they restrict engine performance.

You have to click on the actual order page and then the prices are listed there. Not bad prices and looks like a decent product. Still think I am gonna be happier with the Spiral Turbo baffles from JCL.

JCL Spiral Turbo Baffles are what I have.
www.spiralturbobaffles.com

They have been proven not to choke high HP motors. I can hear the radio fine even with the top down (until I floor it). Sometimes, you get what you pay for.

I agree. Sometimes less money gets you less.
There are performace numbers on the site for the chambered mufflers. Looks like there is a slight drop over open headers. The STB also have a slight drop over open headers on their site.

Either of these will be much better than the Hooker reverse flows. I like chambered but the STB have a good reputatiton. Tough call. I can only say I would do the chambered inserts again.

I'm not sure if I should start this discussion again, it's been beaten to death ... well, anyways....

Most if not all published dyno test data is based on highly modified big cube engines. The baffles perform very well on a 502, not much difference to open pipes. Now, that's great.... but will a 350SB benefit from the baffles as much ?
I have yet not seen any dyno comparison between glasspacks, reverse flow, chambered inserts and baffles on a stock or mildly modified SB......

I won't be able to give you a dyno test, but I can definately tell that I lost a decent bit of HP when I switched from my high-flo true-duals to the Patriot H1060 sidepipes with standard glasspacks. I will be installing the JCL baffles next week and I will definately be able to tell you if the baffles got me my power back in my stroker 385 SB.

The Patriot glasspacks are 1 7/8" diameter ?? Even if they're 2" it's not a surprise that they're choking your 385.
