I am having a problem with temps on my 79 L-82 vette.. When i cruise on the highway the engine temps begin to rise from about 200 to 230.. I have a mechanical fan with an aux fan that i ran off of the ignition so it is constantly on. The only thing that i think might be making the car heat up is that not enough fresh air is entering the engine bay.. Anyone else ever have this problem? If i stop the car with the engine running the temps will come back down to about 200. Do you think that my problem might be not having that front spoiler on? I never used it before and it was fine, but since i rebuilt the engine i've been having these problems.
Engine rebuild? Make sure you don't have a clog or air pocket in your cooling system.
The front spoiler helps...I think I noticed about a 10* drop when I put it back on. The valence and spoiler are different parts, but if you don't have the valence you can't bolt the spoiler in place.

Put the front spoiler on, even the 30-dollar rubber job will make a difference. If you still have problems then dig into the cooling system. How's your timing and A/F ratio? That stuff makes a big difference in running temp as well.
Timing is set at 33 Degrees total timing. Air to fuel ratio is not running lean. I sent the car out to get looked over from bumper to bumper b4 i took it out, so the A/R is good
I agree, put the spoiler back on. In fact, the 79 L82s(with AC) also had rubber extensions on the spoiler to make it even lower. Chevy must have had a reason for that addition!

There are so many things that can contribute to your problem, and it is a commom one. Definately install a front spoiler, it will grab all the air it can and force it into the radiator area. Did you install new seals around the radiator and shroud? If these seals are not in place, all that air will go around the radiator instead of thru it. The radiator is tilted and the air will seek the easiest way thru if the seals are not in place. You could have air in the cooling system. Jack the front of the car up and remove the radiator cap. Start the engine and add coolant as the rad needs it until it is flowing thru the rad without bubbles and replace the cap. Did you replace the radiator cap, it could be bad and cause a heating problem. A lot of people, me included drill a small hole or holes in the t-stat so the cooling system cannot air lock. These are some of the common items that contribute to your problem and usually more than one needs to be corrected. Good luck with your repair!
