I have an Ls-5; 1971 mostly stock. I might do some exhaust mods and I am thinking about an upgrade to headers.
What brands and styles should I look at for best fit? What about performance gains and which would be best.
In an ideal world I would want a set of Tri-Y's but I don't think I can get them. Anyone know any different? What about headers vs Sanderson exhaust manifolds?
I have the Hooker super comps w/ 1 7/8" primaries. I'd recommend you get them bare and have them coated by a reputable company. The coating hooker offers sucks (rusts/flakes).
The headers definetely work. Picked up tons of power:
I really enjoyed the write of your car mods. So, has your engine ever been rebuild? Pretty amazing upgrades, do you have regular access to a dyno? I really like the cam specs too. There are a few voodoo cams that like simlair. How do you keep that vette cool in Texas to allow you to drive on a daily basis .. I have probs in Houston...
The shortblock was done by the previous owner about 10 years ago. There's a ridge forming on top of the bores so it is probably getting time to rebuild in the next few years. I used to have easy access to dynos but they closed down and now I don't know. I won't pay $125 for 3 pulls like some shops want!
For cooling I run without the front license plate, a becool radiator and dual spals. Works fine. The hottest I've seen it sofar was 215F but that was a very hot day sitting in gridlock with max AC. As soon as I started moving it dropped back down.
so zwede, don't mean to jump carbster's thread but would i be better off having my stock heads and manifold ported and polished or what. i also have a 71 ls5 with hedmans and chambered exhaust. have a voodoo 60202 ready to go in this winter. suggestions appreciated...
Are your stock heads in great condition? If not it makes more sense to buy aftermarket aluminums. The Brodix Race-rites, for instance, flow better out of the box than the stock heads can ever do no matter the porting, and run about the same as a full rebuild + porting of your stockers.
