I am working on installing my new R134 A/C parts. I am replacing the compressor and canister and using the original lines and condensor. The new kit comes with a bunch of o-rings. Is this all I need to replace to convert over? Seems too easy.
I think I will go ahead and replace that main A/C compressor hose anyway. $80
Any secrets to putting the new o-rings in? Lube them up? Install dry?
Did your kit come with a bottle of R134a oil? That's what I used to lube the orings. Make sure that you use the new orfice and I've been told that you should always change the dryer when you change over. All in All it's not a hard job. Stay Cool!
You should also flush the system. It surely has some junk in it after all these years, plus it is very good to get the old mineral oil (R12) out.
Put the dryer in last. It has a special material inside that absorbs moisture, so you want to close the system right after you install it.
O-rings should always be lubed with 500 vis mineral oil, NOT R134a oil (aka PAG or Ester oil). 500 vis mineral oil is what is used with R12. Sounds weird to use R12 oil on the o-rings of an R134a system, but that's how it's done according to the shopmanual for my '96 Z28 (R134a from the factory).
I did the conversion on my '71 a few years back and it works great. Never had to top it off.
