You are right, it's not as easy as tapping it out. Read this post:

The shockmount studs that hold the strut rods in have kind of a cone shape end to them. If yur carefull you can knock them out with a hammer without damaging the threads. Use a heavy hammer and be carefull to hit it straight on, directly in the center. When reinstalling the rods, first remove the center bracket from the diff and put the rods into it. Then put the rod ends into the shockmounts. Finally push the bracket up to the diff housing and connect. You might find it easier to line up the diff housing to bracket bolts when the trailing are compressed into the wheel well closer to normal ride height. Anyway, this is the easiest way ive found so far.Ive had mine on and off 3 times.

Rick,
I have the tool you use to remove the shock mounts here at the house. Come by and pick it up or give me a call. No need to mess up your threads.

The mounts do not tap out (unless you are extremely lucky). You have to whack them pretty good. The aftermarket providers carry shock mount removal tools for this purpose. Get one. Do not try to remove the mounts without the tool or you will mushroom the ends of the mount. They ain't cheap if you have to replace one. Get the tool.

JRChurch:

Strongly suggest you soak the shock mounts with PB Blaster for two or three days minimum before you attempt to remove them with the tool which has been described already. Also suggest you get a really big hammer, at least a 5 pounder, if not bigger. It took me several really hard and I mean VERY hard wacks with a sledge hammer to get mine out after a couple of days of soaking with the PB Blaster. Use anti seize after cleaning mount and hole before you re-install.
