I bought some straight chrome 9" tips this weekend and am trying to figure out what I can do to make them come out straight instead of curved down. I pulled the stock tips from the mufflers and the muffler exit is about 2" higher than the rear bumper. Does anyone have any ideas how to do this without doing a bubba on them?
Do your current mufflers have a centered or offset exit? If currently centered, then going to offset will help, but don't believe it will get you 2", you'll have to mount your mufflers in lower position at rear to gain the clearance.
Only other alternative is to have a muffler shop custom bend some "S" shaped exhaust tips to go on the rear of the muffler, then slip your chrome tips over these custom bent tips, might require that you cut some off the 9" chrome tips, but believe this could work, and would be best solution, if your mufflers are still in good condition, and you don't want to replace them right now.
john's 81 mouse, I have already thought about the s bend but they only have approx 5-7" to make these bends. I am using flowmaster with the offset. Do you think a muffler shop can make this bend?
ken74conv, Those are good looking tips--you have mail.
I don't know if they can bend the chrome tips, but they definitely can bend some pipe
stock to the angle you need.
I just installed some Dynomax mufflers (last night). I took the old muffler off and to a muffler shop. I asked them to take some 2.5 stock pipe and make a tip with the pipe bent to the proper angle. I took it home and cleaned up the metal with some emery cloth to give the tip a brushed look.
I don't think chrome tips are worth it. I only see about an inch of the pipe sticking down. One guy was saying that I probably could have the pipe for free given that I need such a small length - they could use cut pieces...
I don't really know for certain, whether or not a muffler shop can make the necessary "S" bends in as little a length as 5 to 7", but I'd sure go out and find a guy willing to give it a try. I installed the Dynomax Super Turbos, with the 2 1/2" offset inlet and outlet, then found some chrome tips at Advanced Auto, and had them 'stretched' by a muffler shop to 2 1/2" inside diameter and used 2 3/4" U clamps, again from Advanced Auto to clamp the tip on the muffler, and to serve as the rear muffler hanger attachment point. The tips extend about 1" beyond the muffler and about 1/2" below the bumper. (Should have made my rear muffler brakets a little longer so I have 1" clearance to avoid heat and exhaust from getting on the bumper)
bluevette--how much louder is it compared to a set of flowmaster 40's?
gkull--like the wing. I have the offset muffler exit so I can actually turn the mufflers to gain clearance if I don't find another easy alternative. What size tires are you running on the rear they look good.
john's81mouse--did you lower the mounting point of the muffler or did the tips just clear on their own?
Here is a pic showing how they hook-up. Pay NO attention to the rust that is an option only add-on. As far as a part or price I am not sure. I looked in my new Ecklers book and did not see them. But maybe the pic will help in your search.
